Ethical Marketing by Everlane

Clothing manufacturing is among the most continuing industries in the world. During the last 20 years or so, much  attention has been paid to how and where our clothes are made, particularly in light of tragedies such as the blaze that tore through a garment manufacturing facility in Bangladesh in 2012, killing 117 people – a factory that supplied clothing to American retailers including Walmart and Sears.

In light of greater awareness about the use of sweatshops, demand for ethically made clothing has soared in previous years, a trend that has given rise to many of companies that want to change how we make and view clothing, including Everlane.
Founded in 2010 by Michael Preysman, Everlane is more committed to ethical manufacturing. All of Everlane’s garments are made in factories that meet the most quality standards – not only in terms of the clothes themselves, but also in how employees are treated. Everlane only partners with manufacturers that reveal a strong commitment to their employees’ welfare, a fact the company prides itself upon in its marketing material.

 Does Everlane Use Ethical Marketing?

Like other  brands, Everlane’s About website tells its brand story, including how the company won the rights and well-being of the employees who make its clothes. What’s really interesting about Everlane, though, is its commitment to radical transparency.

Everlane isn’t content to mostly tell you that its clothes are manufactured and sold ethically; the company also provides customers with a detailed cost breakdown for each and every one of its stylish garments. This includes details on the cost of materials, labor, transportation and transpoting, excise taxes, custom and duties, and even hardware such as lock zippers and buttons.
The company’s Elements jacket, for example, costs $70 to manufacture, and you can see exactly how much each of the manufacturing and logistical elements affects the retail price.Typically, the production costs of most comercially produced clothing are a closely guarded secret. This isn’t merely because a breakdown of such costs would reveal a brand’s potential profit margin on a specific item, but also because they highlight the desperately poor pay and conditions many people working in garment manufacturing company.
By eagerly revealing precisely how much each of its garments costs to make, Everlane can offer its customers the kind of transparency consumers want while enjoying the shopping.

  1. Customers are the king of any market. This is the bestest party of this company that they treat them like this and transparency means alot for customers satisfaction.

    1. Yup if a customer would get a chance to know each and every information about the product they become satisfied to pay for its cost.

  2. Although I appreciate Everlane’s commitment to transparency and sustainable materials, the quality and longevity of some of their clothes are fairly poor.

    1. Everlane is moving towards being a sustainable fashion brand. Their ReNew collection and recycled Denim are obviously their showstopper ranges when it comes to sustainability, but they also use a lot of natural materials that have the potential to be recycled

  4. I think it does a lot of good things and is superior to fast fashion brands, but the fact that they use animal products, lack transparency on the supply chain, don't actually give details on worker wages etc. makes some people wary. I've also seen some complaints on the quality and longevity of their products but I don't shop there so I can't confirm this. All those things together were enough for me to not really want to shop there, but I don't own any everlane products and almost exclusively thrift shop at this stage in my life. That is just my own personal philosophy though so, choose your battles really

    1. I researched Everlane using Remake's sustainable brand criteria and came out with just about the same findings as GoodonYou.

Where I found them most in need of improvement is living wages and sustainable fabrics. Their code of conduct only promises minimum wages and in many countries that is far from enough to make a living. On sustainability they could be doing a lot more

    1. Everlane does not use organic cotton or other low-chemical, low-water alternatives. They do not tell you what kind of dyes or process they use. They do not use leather that has been safely tanned without harmful chemicals. Their jackets are stuffed with polyester and polypropylene.

  7. I do like Everlane and they are definitely better than say an H&M but what dissapointed me about them is how thye seem to be happy to ship even one tee shirt across the world – I dont understand how this is ethical. When I asked them questions about it they had no response.

    1. thanks for the insightful comment – you’re totally right. Everlane are better than most high street brands, but their focus is all about transparency – and we’re coming to a point where many brands are implementing this now. I hope that they start focusing on reducing their carbon footprint, and try working with more factories in the U.S./wherever their customers are based. x

  8. Although I appreciate Everlane’s commitment to transparency and sustainable materials, I have found that the quality and longevity of some of their clothes to be fairly poor. For example, their work pants have suffered unraveled stitching and their thin t-shirts have formed holes after only few wears, despite following wash instructions. Nevertheless, I have been pleased with the quality of their denim and backpacks. Item longevity is so important in our quest for more sustainable fashion – well-made clothing that carries you through several seasons will be much less environmentally damaging than items that need to be replaced every few wears.

    1. Longevity is definitely something all fashion houses need to focus on! I’ve been happy with my own Everlane pieces – I have two jumpers, a pair of trousers, and a blazer from them which all are almost as good as new. That said, I hand wash my jumpers and really am careful when wearing everything as they’re some of my favourite things to wear! It’d be great to see Everlane offer a repair service (I imagine in the US to start with) like some other leading ethical brands do now.
